SRV’s Yellow Strat

SRV Yellow

The mystery of SRV’s guitars extends even to the name of this guitar… was it “Yellow,” “The Yellow One,” “Butter,” “Butterscotch (not to be confused with Scotch)” or did it even have a name at all?

This ‘59 Strat was sold to Charley Wirz (of SRV axe fame) by Vince Martell, lead guitarist of Vanilla Fudge (who, by the way, are definately still rockin’, if you get a chance to see ‘em.)

Vince had this guitar routed for four humbucker, which essentially turned it into a hollow-body guitar when Charley equipped it with just one single-coil pickup in the neck position before he gave it to SRV in 1981. This allowed Stevie to move his signature ‘SRV’ decals below the strings to where the other pickups would have been located.

Yellow was stolen sometime between 1985 and 1987 (again, depending on who you ask), and has apparently reappeared at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Cafe. Any Mad Stratter readers out there from the Western U.S. that can confirm this?
